Firmly squeeze the centre of the cylinder to make sure the sections of clay 'bond' rather than sliding against each other. If you don't do this you may find that you lose definition. When you have done this, start to lengthen by squeezing and pulling, finally rolling it until you have a cylinder of approximately 1cm diameter.
